What is EMI?

EMI means Equated Monthly Installment. It is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan over a chosen tenure. Each EMI includes two parts: principal and interest. In the first phase of most loans, the interest portion is higher and principal repayment is lower. As tenure progresses, interest portion reduces and principal portion increases. This is why total interest can become large for long-tenure loans even when monthly EMI looks affordable.
